Detailed Itinerary:
This London historical food tour explores how immigration shaped British cuisine, one era, one flavour at a time. Over three-four hours, you’ll walk through central London while enjoying substantial food and drink tastings that reflect the city’s layered culinary history.
Led by Martina, this experience blends heritage, storytelling and generous tastings into a seamless journey through London’s evolving food identity.
Your experience starts with the Romans, who founded Londinium in 43 CE and introduced new trade routes, ingredients and dining customs to Britain.
You’ll enjoy Roman-inspired wine alongside olives, cheese, bread and olive oil flavours that once travelled across the Roman Empire to reach Britain. This first stop sets the tone for the tour: London has always been connected to the wider world, and its food culture has always been shaped by movement.
From empire to survival, next you’ll step into medieval London at one of the city’s historic taverns.
Here you’ll taste a traditional half pint of ale paired with a classic British pie (vegetarian option available). As you enjoy these staple foods, Martina explains how brewing, preservation and baking traditions evolved after the fall of the Roman Empire and how women played a central role in early brewing culture.
As London grew through international trade, new communities brought new techniques.
Along the route, you’ll sample a pastry inspired by 17th-century refugee baking traditions. Huguenot arrivals introduced butter-rich doughs and refined baking methods that influenced British patisserie and everyday baking.

You’ll also explore how London’s early coffeehouses became social hubs where ideas, goods and global influences mixed, shaping not just food culture but the city’s public life.
At Twinings, you’ll take part in a guided tea tasting while discovering the global story behind Britain’s most recognisable beverage.
Tea arrived from China via international trade networks and gradually moved from elite luxury to everyday ritual. Through this tasting, you’ll gain insight into how taxation, smuggling and empire shaped British consumption habits and how a foreign import became a national symbol.
Next, you’ll sit down at a local Indian restaurant to share a generous balti dish with rice.
In the mid-20th century, migrants from South Asia transformed Britain’s restaurant landscape. As communities established themselves in London, dishes evolved to reflect both traditional flavours and local tastes.
Your final tasting is a rum cocktail, representing another defining chapter in London’s food story.
For centuries, Britain consumed sugar and rum produced in the Caribbean. When Caribbean communities arrived in the post-war period, they brought culinary traditions that would eventually influence London’s restaurants, street food and home cooking.
This final stop ties together the themes of trade, migration and cultural exchange that define this London food and immigration tour.
By the end of the experience, you will have tasted Roman, medieval, European refugee, South Asian and Caribbean influences all within one city.
This is not simply a tasting tour.
It is a guided journey through 2,000 years of British food history and the people who shaped it.
